International Women’s Day at DM Roads – Project Manager Eman Aljaroudi tells her story

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Eman Aljaroudi reflects on her journey at DM Roads in South Australia and her experience as a female engineer in a traditionally male-dominated industry.

Whether it’s on the pitch or off the pitch – everyone describes Eman as a team player.

Eman joined Downer in 2019 as a Project Engineer, in search of a bigger challenge and quickly excelled in the role.

“The days were long and tedious but incredibly rewarding and I’m extremely proud of the work we did on the Regency to Pym Street upgrade and resurfacing Port Wakefield Road, laying 60,000 tonnes of asphalt over the course of only seven weeks.”

In less than two years, Eman has quickly risen through the ranks and has recently been promoted to Project Manager for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).

“I took on the role without any previous experience in the electrical space but it's turned out to be an incredible opportunity which has really progressed my career and it’s exciting to work in an area of major growth,” Eman says.

“One of the things I would love to see is an increase in gender diversity in the ITS space - as one of only two female engineers on our team - it’s so important to create stronger pathways for women to excel in a wide variety of engineering disciplines,” she adds.

Eman is a strong advocate of female leadership in the industry and is part of the local Civil Contractors Federation Women in Civil group. "You can’t be what you can’t see,” she says, “It’s vital that society sees talented and capable women achieving incredible things."

“At DM Roads, I can say that as a female leader I’ve built really strong relationships with my team and it’s refreshing to work within such a respectful environment. I think it’s indicative of a positive workplace culture at DM Roads which celebrates the contribution of women and works to collectively break the bias.”

Outside of work, Eman continues to be a trailblazer, recently winning her seven aside soccer tournament!
